Release night comes roughly every two months. At 7:30 PM Pacific time teams from California, Massachusetts, and Bangalore India, come together to peform a slightly chaotic, choreographed dance, where servers are downed, databases are updated, apps are installed and tested for the bazillionth time, and everyone crosses their fingers as messages fly over IM, IRC, and the conference call. Because it’s software, it doesn’t matter how many times you tested it, something always goes awry. Sometimes it’s something inconsequential, sometimes it isn’t*. But no matter what happens release night is always a rush, because when all is said and done your hard work is just a click away from your customers.

I love release night. Of course, that’s thanks, in no small part, to the fact that I love my job.
