On a Steel Horse I Ride…
Until today I always thought that line was cool, but nothing more than artistic license. Today I learned otherwise.Taking the new bike up to near highway speeds you could just feel the power thrumming through your legs, and I very much felt like I imagine a young Native American, experiencing their first real gallop would. When you get on a big, powerful, horse bareback for the first time you really do have a feeling that you’re straddling a source of immense power just waiting to thrust into action, and today felt very similar. Like riding a large horse for the first time, it is scary, and demands your respect and attention.I’d taken the scooter up to 80 on the highway before, and while my analytical side knew that the new bike was more powerful, I was totally unprepared for what I found. Fortunately I try to be extremely careful, and cautious, when it comes to motorcycles and that served me quite well. On the scooter I was always opening the throttle up all the way. On the bike I barely have to think about opening it and it feels like it’s rocketing forwards.Like a big new horse, I’m treating her with respect, caution, and care, because she can kick my ass.P.S. For those who don’t know: The old scooter was a 150cc Aprilia Scarabeo. Great scooter, with big motorcycle size tires. The new bike is a Honda VFR750F.
