Drunken Brawl

          0 votes on the drawing.

Ten o’clock. Time for the late night dog walk. Coat, bags, keys, phone…nah won’t need phone. Get to the park and find a man standing on the sidewalk, talking to himself, and standing in a pool of something that look suspiciously like it might be his own urine.

I get a little ways away and three other men join him and then two of them start grappling and fall down while the others watch seemingly unconcerned…. wtf?!… then one of the standing guys starts swinging at the other one with punches and movements so slow I honestly couldn’t be sure if they’re horsing around or fighting very poorly. Eventually it becomes clear it’s a fight, and I have no phone to call the cops.

I don’t think anyone’s going to get notably hurt with movements that slow but better safe than sorry. That, and they’re blocking the park entrance I usually use.

The whole dynamic was very strange. It was like watching a dominant dog beating up lower ranked dogs, and then watching those dogs move back to the one that just kicked their ass hoping to please it.

Lest you think Boston is a bad place, this is the first time I’ve seen anything like this around my house. Normally things are as quiet as any suburb. We occasionally have a homeless person sleeping in the park, but they always keep to themselves and never bother anyone. During summer days it’s filled with people of all ages playing games, walking dogs, using the swings, and generally using a park for all the things you’d hope it’d be used for.

This event makes me think of two things: 1) Just because YOU won’t need your phone doesn’t mean you won’t find someone else who could. 2) I will never be one of those submissive dogs. You touch me and I will fuck you up, or go down trying. And, afterwards, I will not come to you begging for acceptance.

The drawing is one of the slow motion punches, which would later be followed by a slow motion knee to the groin region and a thrown recycling bin that didn’t come close.

[Update] It turns out that after I left one of the guys got stabbed. I spoke with a detective about it this morning and will go down to the station after work to make a statement.
