What we need…

I’ve been practically drooling over the Piaggio MP3. The plan was to get one and spend my vacation riding it from Boston, to Miami, to the Grand Canyon, and back to Boston, but once again I am reminded that, in life, we get what we need, not what we want, and what I need, is a lesson in paying bills. I make good money, enough to keep up with my bills, but I forget about them, and have, lately, been bad about paying them on time. There’s no good excuse for it. It’s simply a hard lesson I needed to learn.  The consequences of my actions finally caught up with me to teach me the lesson I needed in the form of an inability to get financing.

But while I have been drooling over the MP3 it was a means to two ends: a method of transportation (I have no car), and a way to fulfill the dream of many long motorcycle rides across the country. The dream hasn’t died, but it may take a different form. There are almost no used MP3s yet, and the ones there are aren’t cheap, but there are used motorcycles aplenty, although , sadly, the affordable ones are almost all sport bikes, not cruisers, or touring / adventure-touring bikes you’d want for a long trip. I probably won’t save up enough for a decent used bike before this season is over, but I ride year round, and maybe my first long ride can happen before winter hits the south…

The lesson though? It’ll be ground in hard by the time I can actually find a decent bike I can afford: months of frustration at not being able to go out for any ride as I’ve just sold my Aprilia, and months of looking at used bikes I would love to make an offer on, but have to just sit and watch go away…

I want an MP3, but I needed a lesson, and the transportation which I need, but not desperately, will find another form to take.
